0 ULOS FROM NORTH SUMATERA

Ulos known as typical fabric of North Sumatra. Sons and daughters of Batak and the traditional elders are very proud to use this fabric. 


In each ceremony, Ulos can be found everywhere. Ulos appear as clothes, room decorations, ornaments and ceremonial paraphernalia. 

In addition, Ulos also be used as gift items given by one party to another. According to local custom, the giver Ulos higher position of the receiving party. For example, granting Ulos king to his people. 

In use, Ulos divided into several types, such as :

1. Ulos Ragidup 

Ulos type whose value is highest as a way of making it more difficult than other types Ulos. Ulos length is usually about eight feet by five feet wide. The middle section is called the body, filled with white space using the given pattern ikat lungsi technique. While at the end made with additional lungsi techniques. 


This fabric is used by men who already have grandchildren, or the wife of this man if the man was dead. Additionally, Ulos serve as ceremonial offerings in new huta separation. 



2. Ulos Mangiring
Ulos this type length is only 165 cm and width 70 cm. Commonly used in ceremonies to welcome a newborn baby, as an expression of gratitude for the arrival of a new member in the family. 

Ulos Mangiring made using ikat lungsi technique. The fabric is a sheet which is decorated with shades shaped arrows. Background color used in the Mangiring Ulos brown or maroon. 



3. Ulos Sibolang 

Ulos type is used in ceremonies or rites of mourning the death of a husband. Ulos Sibolang shaped shawl given to wives whose husbands have died, as a symbol that the status has changed. 


In the Batak who follows patrilineal lineage system, the term marriage levirat. Ie, if a woman has left her husband dead, the woman is expected to marry the husband's brother or sister. 

Ulos Sibolang was featured in a dark background such as dark blue, and ikat lungsi patterned are marked in light blue. 



4. Ulos Ragihotang 

Ulos type is used by men and women who are married. For men, this fabric worn as a shawl on the shoulders, while for women, the cloth covering worn as a chest or underwear bottom. 


This fabric is usually dark brown with decorative lines made with ikat lungsi technique.As the development time, Ulos used in traditional ceremonies are very rare, permitted to be used in other traditional ceremonies. This was deliberately done to prevent the extinction of the cloth.
